Peer Educator

Internship Overview:

The Peer Educator internship is a peer outreach program co-created by the Violence Prevention Programs Office and the Women’s Center to engage U of I students in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence in their respective communities on campus. Students will be trained to educate their peers on various topics including sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking and plan and execute outreach events. Students will explore how this violence impacts all different types of communities, including college students, families, LGBTQQI+ community members, international students, people of color, and people with disabilities. Peer Educators are compassionate and committed students who represent a broad range of identities, communities and academic programs on campus. These students want to make a real difference in how Vandals respond to sexual and gender-based violence. This internship requires a commitment of 130 hours of class time, readings, activities, and presentations over the course of a semester.

Coures Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge about sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking;
• Discuss the physical, emotional and health-related consequences related to sexual and gender-based violence;
• Discuss issues surrounding sexual and gender-based violence, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking including the use of drugs and alcohol to facilitate these crimes;
• Discuss primary prevention strategies, specifically bystander intervention;
• Facilitate sexual and gender-based violence presentations and demonstrate group facilitation skills.

Articles, videos, TED talks, etc. as assigned weekly by instructor.

Course Requirements:

Full attendance and engaged participation is required during all meetings. Interns must complete required homework assignments prior to weekly class meetings. Interns will be required to submit a weekly two-page reflection on assigned readings.
