Academic Standing

Academic standing for students is determined with a combination of the institutional cumulative and semester GPA each semester after final grades are posted.  Academic standing rules are different for Graduate, Law, and Undergraduate students. Students should contact their Dean's Office if they need assistance or have questions about their academic standing.

Graduate Students

Good Standing

Students with an institutional semester and cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.

Academic Probation

Students earning an institutional semester or cumulative GPA below 3.00.

Academic Disqualification

Students on probation who earn a semester GPA below a 3.00.  Disqualified students are not eligible to continue taking classes at the university without being reinstated by the College of Graduate Studies.

Law Students

Refer to the Law Student Handbook section III.G Satisfactory Academic Progress for definitions and procedures.

Undergraduate Students

Good Standing

Students with an institutional cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.

Refer to the links below for academic probation and disqualification.

When a students cumulative institutional GPA falls below a 2.00, the student is placed on Academic Probation. Probation is a serious matter and if not corrected in the subsequent semester, could lead to academic disqualification.

Students are notified by the Registrar via email when placed on Academic Probation and will have a Probation Hold placed on their account. This hold is in place until the student is able to meet with their academic advisor and create a plan to move forward. Keep in mind that this hold prevents registration activity such as adding, dropping, or withdrawing from classes. A Probation Hold will be placed on the student's account after each semester placed on Academic Probation.

Students should be sure to meet with their advisor right away after receiving the email notification of Academic Probation. The sooner help can be provided, the easier it is to recover academically. Prior to meeting with the advisor, students should complete an Academic Plan and bring a copy of that plan to the advising appointment. The Probation Hold is removed once a meeting with the advisor occurs. Please be aware that colleges may require students to participate in a college-specific success program as part of any agreement to remove the Probation Hold.

Academic disqualification is a serious matter and each college independently evaluates their own students' petition for reinstatement and assesses each on a case-by-case basis. Failure to submit a petition for reinstatement to the primary major college dean's office can result in delays and possibly even denial of a petition. If the petition for reinstatement is denied by the primary major's college, students may not appeal to another college for consideration and must wait until the subsequent semester to be reinstated.

First semester college students who fail to achieve a 1.00 or higher GPA will not be placed on Academic Probation, but instead be placed on First Academic Disqualification as defined in Catalog Regulation L.

A student on First Academic Disqualification is expected to remain out of the University for the next semester. Once the required semester away is complete (summer does not qualify), the student will be able to return to the university by notifying the Registrar's Office or applying for readmission if the student has not attended for two years. Students will work closely with their advisor and establish a plan to ensure academic success during the transition back to school.

If there are significant and documented extenuating circumstances, students may petition their college dean's office for immediate reinstatement without a one semester absence. It is important to note that a reinstatement petition is not guaranteed to be approved and must be submitted by the deadline in order to be considered. A petition for reinstatement must answer the following questions and be sent to the appropriate college dean's contact:

  1. List honest, specific reasons why you did not do well academically the last semester that you were enrolled, as well as other semesters leading to disqualification.
  2. List all classes that you plan to take in the next semester and how you intend to succeed in each. You must address each class individually and not as a group. Note any classes you plan to repeat from previous semesters and address how you will improve your performance in each of those classes.
  3. What steps will you take to ensure your academic success? What resources will you use to help you academically successful? Who will hold you accountable?
  4. Will you work while taking classes? If so, how many hours per week do you plan to work?
  5. What are your academic and career goals? Why do you want to return to the University of Idaho?

Please take this process seriously and provide your college enough detail to make an informed decision. Your petition should include any supporting documentation you are using to explain why your college should consider an immediate reinstatement. Supporting documentation can include letters provided by a medical provider, letters of support from academic instructors, legal documentation, etc.

If a petition for immediate reinstatement is approved by the college or the student has sat out for one semester as described above, they will return on Academic Probation. Refer to the Academic Probation section above for instructions regarding submission of an academic plan, the Probation Hold, and meeting with an academic advisor.

Students who are ready to return after sitting out at least one semester must first contact their college dean's office and alert them of the intention to return in the upcoming semester. The college deans office will notify the Registrar's Office to reinstate students for the planned semester of return.

International Students

International students who are academically disqualified must take immediate action to maintain their immigration status and should contact the International Programs Office to explore options.

Future Registrations

Students who have registered for classes for the upcoming semester, following academic disqualification, will be dropped before the start of the semester. Students who are successfully reinstated after classes have been dropped may re-register for classes. Space is not guaranteed in any class that was previously dropped.

A student on Academic Probation, who returned from Second Academic Disqualification, fails to achieve an institutional cumulative GPA and semester GPA of at least 2.00 will be placed on Third Academic Disqualification. Returning to the university after Third Academic Disqualification is challenging and often not successful unless the student has taking a meaningful leave of absence from the university. The student must demonstrate to the university that they have made significant changes in their life that can help them be academically successful. After Third Academic Disqualification it is recommended that students remain out of the university for at least a year.

If a petition for reinstatement to the college dean's office is successful, the student is also required to submit a subsequent Academic Petition to the Academic Petitions Committee will make the final determination whether or not to reinstate the student for the upcoming semester. It is important to note a denial at either step will prevent reinstatement.

Students must have significant extenuating circumstances in order to petition for reinstatement on Third Academic Disqualification. Students must provide an extremely well thought out and articulated academic success plan. A petition for reinstatement must answer the following questions and be sent to the appropriate college dean's contact:

  1. List honest, specific reasons why you did not do well academically the last semester that you were enrolled, as well as other semesters leading to disqualification.
  2. List all classes that you plan to take in the next semester and how you intend to succeed in each. You must address each class individually and not as a group. Note any classes you plan to repeat from previous semesters and address how you will improve your performance in each of those classes.
  3. Provide a detailed academic plan and schedule that will lead to you to academic success if reinstated.
  4. What steps will you take to ensure your academic success? What resources will you use to help you academically successful? Who will hold you accountable?
  5. Will you work while taking classes? If so, how many hours per week do you plan to work?
  6. Have you completed any college-level classes at another institution after your disqualification from the University of Idaho? If so, include a copy of your unofficial transcript showing final grades.
  7. What are your academic and career goals? Why do you want to return to the University of Idaho?

Please take this process seriously and provide your college enough detail to make an informed decision. Fall Semester

Five business days before the official start of the Fall semester.*

*Please consult with your college dean's office as soon as you learn that you have been academically disqualified. Your college may strong recommend that you should submit a petition sooner than this deadline, especially if you have already registered for the upcoming semester.

Spring Semester

Five business days before the official start of the Spring semester.*

*Please consult with your college dean's office as soon as you learn that you have been academically disqualified. Your college may strong recommend that you should submit a petition sooner than this deadline, especially if you have already registered for the upcoming semester.

Summer Semester

It is strongly recommended that you not submit a petition for reinstatement for the summer semester. Summer classes are accelerated and compressed. Classes completed during the summer do not impact academic standing and your college must agree to reinstatement in the subsequent Fall semester for you to continue taking classes.

Late Petitions

If a petition for reinstatement is received after the deadline, colleges are under no obligation to consider that petition for the upcoming semester. As a result, late petitions may be outright denied or considered for a future semester.

The student's declared primary major determines the college to which a petition must be submitted for reinstatement. If a student truly intends to change their major to a different college, they must speak with the college dean's contact of the intended college to inquire if the college is willing to allow a change of major while on academic disqualification. If the college agrees, the student must submit a change of major request in MyUI and it must be approved before a petition for reinstatement can be submitted to the new college.

If the student has not been enrolled for more than two years, they must first apply for admission as a returning student. Before being admitted as a returning student, the student must petition for reinstatement through the college dean of the major declared on the application for admission. A denial of reinstatement will result in the application being denied as well. For this reason, it is highly recommended students reach out to the appropriate college dean's contact to discuss the possibility of entry into their college as a returning student before submitting an application for admission.
