Best Management Practices for Minimizing Ammonia Volatilization from Fertilizer Nitrogen Applications in Idaho Crops

BUL0927

March 31, 2019

Nitrogen fertilizer applications in areas of intensive agricultural production of Idaho can result in loss of nitrogen by ammonia volatilization. However, effective use of best management practices can minimize that loss and improve fertilizer use efficiency.

This publication describes some best management practices that cover fertilizer rate, source and type, as well as the time and method of fertilizer application. It also discusses soil and environmental conditions that provide a lower risk of ammonia volatilization.
