Student Teaching

Student teaching is the culminating field experience of the teacher education program. This field experience is a full-semester placement in a real-world school setting. As an aspiring teacher you will experience the following milestones:

• Gain instructional experience in a real-world classroom 

• Learn how to manage the daily responsibilities of a classroom setting

• Participate in lesson planning, grading, classroom management and more

Student Teaching Placement

Your placement coordinator will work hard to place you within the (participating) school district of your choice in the follow areas: This can range from: Coeur d’Alene/Northern Idaho, Boise/Southern Idaho, Moscow/Lewiston, out of state or international teaching opportunities. Once you have your student teaching assignment, you will be monitored by a mentor teacher from the district as well as a supervisor assigned through the University of Idaho.

Application

1. The student teaching application process should be completed one year (two semesters) prior to the student teaching semester. To learn more, please attend the info meeting offered each semester prior to completing the online application. You must be fully accepted into the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences (EHHS) Teacher Education program at the time the application is due.
   
   Applications to student teach in the fall are due by Oct. 1 and will be reviewed and approved by Nov. 15.
   
   Applications to student teach in the spring are due by March 1st and will be reviewed and approved by April 15.

2. Keep in mind you cannot have any course work left to take during or after the internship that is not part of the internship semester or year. Exceptions must be submitted in writing to the Director of Teacher Education.

3. Before you apply, you must take or schedule any required Praxis exam(s). You will be asked to report your scores or upcoming test dates as part of the application.
