Postdoctoral Mentoring Award

Description

The post-doctoral mentoring award is to recognize faculty who have demonstrated exceptional support and guidance for University of Idaho post-doctoral scholars/fellows. The award is presented by the College of Graduate Studies and the Office of Research and Economic Development.

Eligibility

Nominees must be members of the graduate faculty who have served at the University of Idaho for at least 5 years and who have employed and have an outstanding record of mentoring post-doctoral scholars/fellows.

Selection Criteria

• Extraordinary effectiveness as a mentor to their post-doctoral scholar/fellow.
• Documented efforts which have assisted in the professional development of the post-doctoral scholar/fellow.
• Demonstrated advocacy in fostering an environment supportive of the post-doctoral scholar/fellows success.

The Award

The recipient receives a gift recognizing the award and $2,500. The award will be presented at the University Excellence Awards Ceremony in April.

Nomination Process

All nomination materials must be submitted via the Excellence Awards Nomination Form. Nominations are due at 5 p.m. Pacific time, Friday, Feb. 9, 2024. COGS will not accept incomplete nomination packets. It is the duty of the Nominator and Nominee to gather all necessary materials for a completed nomination application. Nominations must adhere to the length guidelines above.

The nomination package should include:

1. A letter, signed by the nominator, which includes the nominee’s name, unit, college and years of service at the University of Idaho. The letter should present the case for the nominee and comment on the nominee’s positive impact on post-doctoral scholars/fellows. The letter must not exceed three pages.
2. A personal statement by the nominee stating his/her goals, methods, and philosophy in mentoring post-doctoral scholars/fellows, not to exceed two pages.
3. A curriculum vita (not to exceed 5 pages), which clearly identifies current and former post-doctoral scholars/fellows mentored by the nominee. The vita should also clearly identify which scholarly works are co-produced/co-authored by post-docs.
4. Two letters of support. One shall be from a current or former post-doc, and one shall be from a member of the U of I graduate faculty who is knowledgeable about the efforts of the award nominee.

Selection Process

An interdisciplinary committee selected by COGS and the U of I Office of Research and Economic Development and composed of faculty and post-doctoral scholars/fellows who are part of the U of I Post-doctoral Association will review and select the winner.
