Lionel Hampton School of Music
Joseph Baruch
Computer Science, Class of 2026
Hometown: Eagle, Idaho
As I begin my third year at the University of Idaho and as a member of its award-winning jazz choir, I've begun seizing
opportunities to step up, help out and spend time with a community that really matters to me. College is short: before
you know it, all four years are done. This year, I want to be there for our new students, encouraging them to stick with
it and keep trying in the face of challenges. That's because the choir experience is so much fun, and it truly pays off.
I entered my sophomore year as a computer science major with no experience in coding, so the year was destined to be
interesting. I quickly fell in love with learning, and most of my highlights consisted of studying hard on challenging
concepts and chasing after that sweet satisfaction when you finally find the solution. Outside of my major, the memories
made as part of jazz choir, marching band, jazz band and saxophone studio, as well as spending time with my friends, are
moments I cherish.
Music has been one of the most meaningful ways that I stay active in my community. I've met some of the most important
people in my life through musical involvement. My experience here at U of I would not be the same without it; I'd be a
very different person.
Scholarships have benefited me greatly, helping strike a balance between academics, work and involvement, and directly
impacting my performance and opportunities. The Poe Music Scholarship for non-music majors allows me to take part in
extracurricular activities that have led to an abundance of great moments. It's so validating to be rewarded through a
scholarship for your hard work and passion. And, the harder I work at gaining experience and knowledge now, the more
interesting and fulfilling my job will be after college.
Thank you for providing me with the resources that have helped make so many memories as part of such a beautiful
community.
Without the gracious scholarships provided by University of Idaho donors, my life wouldn’t be the same. I have been able
to have the college experience that most young adults dream of. Thank you for providing me with the resources that have
helped make so many memories as part of such a beautiful community.
