Kevinisha Lewis
Juris Doctorate, Class of 2025
Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana
The past academic year was a bittersweet time and also one that exemplified resilience. It was the start of my journey in pursuit of a lifelong dream to become an attorney. But it was also the time, in the middle of my first semester at the University of Idaho, when I faced the sudden loss of my beloved stepfather, Kenneth Mornay. As a big part of my life since I was three years old, my stepfather was one of my best friends, constantly encouraging me in my desire for an education.
Alone in Idaho, more than 2,000 miles from family, I was supported by my deans, professors and classmates during one of the most challenging times in my life. I felt loved and comforted, just as if I were home in Louisiana. In a sense, my Vandal family is my home away from home.
I currently represent U of I as chief of staff for the Western Region of the National Black Law Student Association. I am a council officer of the Moscow Student Bar Association, vice president of the local chapter of the Black Law Student Association and a member of the Native American Law Student Association. This year, my coursework focuses on the areas of business law where I truly want to practice. I plan to gain my limited license here in Idaho, which will allow me to take part in clinics in this state.
My ultimate goal is to start my own law firm focused on business and real estate law on a national level. I want to make a powerful and inspiring impact on the world, and to give back to others as others have supported me. Attending the University of Idaho means having access to an outstanding, affordable, hands-on educational experience. U of I has given me confidence that I have what it takes to overcome whatever hurdles come my way and make a positive change in the world.
Support from scholarship awards enabled me to pursue an education in law at U of I. Scholarships provide opportunities to grow and branch out, and let me focus on learning without the worry of detrimental financial obligations that could impact my studies.
Thank you for gifting me with the opportunity to, one day soon, make a powerful, positive impact on others.
Thanks to donors' gifts, I have the flexibility to take part in extracurricular activities that let me advocate for and aid others, reminding me that even when I face challenging times, my purpose is to help others to the best of my ability. Thank you for gifting me with the opportunity to, one day soon, make a powerful, positive impact on others.
