The world of work is vast, varied, and full of exciting possibilities. Because of this, the line between major and career is rarely straight. Below are resources to help you explore careers and majors including career assessments that ask questions to uncover your interests and strengths; data that dives deeper into industries, regions, and educational considerations; and other strategies for exploring your career interests and professional values.
Additional Ideas to Explore your Career Interests
- Meet with a career advisor to discuss your interests, explore possibilities and make an action plan to pursue a compatible major or career.
- Explore your personality, interests and values using a career assessment such as Focus 2 or Sokanu Career Explorer.
- Research career options and possibilities by browsing Career Finder.
- Conduct an informational-interviews or job shadow to learn more about a career field you are considering.
- Test out your interests through experiential learning activities such as undergraduate research, service-learning, internships, part-time jobs, clubs and organizations, volunteering and leadership activities.
Enroll in a Major Exploration Class
Having difficulty selecting a major, contemplating what you want to do with your major, or exploring career options? Enroll in the career and major exploration course offered each spring and fall semester. Look for INTR 201-01 on the U of I class schedule.
