Welcome to the Department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences at the University of Idaho. Our Department is composed of an amazing group of undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, and faculty who share a passion for understanding the natural world and discovering how best to manage these incredible resources. Located in the northern Rocky Mountains of Idaho, we are surrounded by beautiful forests, rivers, and streams that provide a fantastic backdrop for learning and exploring.
We take our legacy of leadership in these fields seriously – our forestry, rangeland conservation, and renewable materials programs have been around for more than a century, and our undergraduate degree in fire ecology and management was the first of its kind in the country.
We believe students benefit from the opportunity to learn from leading researchers, and our faculty will share this knowledge and work with you side-by-side in the classroom and the field. We place a high priority on hands-on learning and utilizing our diverse resources to provide you with a unique experience. Many are located near our Moscow campus, including the 8,500-acre University of Idaho Experimental Forest, Pitkin Forest Nursery, and the only Fire Combustion Lab located on a university campus in the U.S. And if you want to go further abroad, we have resources across the state from the McCall Field Campus on the shores of Lake Payette, the UI Water Center in Boise, and the 10,400-acre Rinker Rock Creek Ranch near Hailey, Idaho.
Our academic and support staff in the Department and College of Natural Resources are committed to offering a welcoming environment for our students. Consistent with our land-grant mission, our research programs are focused on discovering and disseminating new knowledge related to forests and rangelands of Idaho and beyond. Through integrated, multidisciplinary approaches we strive to develop basic and solution-based science to develop better approaches to management, conservation, and restoration of ecosystems and landscapes. Our faculty and staff are committed to creating the knowledge and educate the future leaders needed to meet society’s needs.
