Student Groups
The School of Journalism and Mass Media takes pride in helping students succeed inside and outside the classroom. Faculty members encourage students to get involved in Student Media and student clubs, including the Public Relations Student Society of America, and SPJ. These co-curricular activities give students a chance to apply classroom concepts to real-life situations. They also nurture connections with alumni and regional media professionals through guest speakers, field trips and conferences. One of the student groups, SPJ is affiliated with a national organization, the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism organization. It encourages the free practice of journalism and stimulates high standards of ethical behavior. The U of I chapter works to uphold these standards. Members will meet potential employers, learn about jobs and internships, hear journalists speak about current issues, attend conferences and apply for awards.
