Walking
We are transportation
As is the case with most colleges and other urban environments all over the world, the best way to travel across the U of I campus is on foot. Inexpensive, efficient and convenient, walking takes you from the perimeter of campus to the Idaho Student Union Building in about 10 minutes. Walk from the Identity apartments to the Kibbie Dome in about twenty, and from Kibbie to the other side of town in just over an hour. Our campus and the city of Moscow neatly fit within a walkable 2-mile diameter circle.
Etiquette
As we walk across campus, it’s important to work together to make our short trip as safe and enjoyable as possible:
- If you need to text, talk or slow down for any reason, step out of the walkway so your fellow Vandals can get where they’re going.
- Turn music down so you can hear approaching bicycles, skateboards, scooters and motorized vehicles.
- If walking with friends, walk in a column so your fellow Vandals going the opposite way or needing to pass have the space they need.
- Slow down and look in all directions before you enter a crosswalk, confirming that drivers see you and are going to stop.
Inclement weather
Rain and snow may make walking a little more challenging. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather. When snow and/or ice is on the ground, utilize personal traction devices to prevent slips and falls. Yield to workers and machinery clearing snow and just as you would when driving, allow extra time to get where you’re going!
Safe Walk
A quick call to Campus Security (208-885-7233 (SAFE)) is all it takes to request the Safe Walk service — no questions asked. A security officer will meet a caller any place on the Moscow campus and walk that person(s) to their destination on campus. Campus Security encourages the campus community to use Safe Walk when needed. For more information or questions, go to Safe Walk or contact Campus Security at 208-885-7233 (SAFE) or campus-security@uidaho.edu.
