Research
The Experimental Forest is a home for basic and applied research on 10,300 acres of actively managed, productive working forestland and special management areas. We have a long history of research in forest operations, silviculture, wildland and prescribed fire, wildlife management and remote sensing applications in forestry. Please join the University of Idaho Experimental Forest Group in ArcGIS Online to explore, download, and contribute UIEF geospatial data and applications (University of Idaho login required). Through collaboration with Idaho Dept. of Lands, Northwest Management, Inc. and other industry partners we were the first experimental forest in the United States to complete and evaluate a comprehensive single-tree inventory derived from lidar and have complete lidar-based inventories each year from 2019-2022. Applied Forest Utilization Research helps fulfill the university's land-grant mission and the guiding legislation of the Forest, Wildlife and Range Experiment Station under Idaho Code Title 38.
