Information Sessions

The Ins and Outs of Undergraduate Research Session

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) wants to help students with their research and creative activities. The OUR therefore offers information sessions on:

Topic 1 — What is Undergraduate Research: complete with a guide on FAQs and tips for getting started. We also discuss our semester and summer programs and our partnered programs on campus (ie.e, INBRE, IHHE, etc.). These sessions are normally in September and October.

Topic 2 — How to find semester and summer research opportunities (both on campus and off). With summer rapidly approaching, the OUR helps promote nationwide REUs, internships or fellowships as well as discusses the steps for the OUR’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) awards. These awards fund the students with a $5000 stipend and up to $1000 of supply funds for research to be carried out on U of I campus for 10 weeks of the summer and includes travel to a summer Undergraduate Research Conference. These sessions are normally held in January and February.

Topic 3 — How to prepare an abstract and a poster. With the OUR Annual Research Symposium being held in late April, and the abstract deadline April 5 each year, the OUR will go over the steps on how to create and submit an abstract and will provide Powerpoint tips and examples of posters for students to see how best prepare their posters. These sessions are normally in March.
