HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)
On April 14, 2003 HIPAA was implemented. HIPAA governs how health care providers use and disclose personally identifiable health information, including use and disclosure for research purposes. Uses and Disclosures for Research
The final rule to the Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information (the Privacy Rule) are in the Aug. 14, 2002 Federal Register (Uses and Disclosures for Research Purposes, 45CFR 164.512(i)). Investigators conducting any research using individuals’ personal health information should review these rules.
