April 12, 2022

MOSCOW, Idaho — April 11, 2022 — A University of Idaho junior with a double major in biochemistry, and molecular biology and biotechnology, was selected from a pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors as this year’s recipient of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. Zhenhao “Victor” Zhong will receive up to $7,500 to pay for tuition, fees, books and room and board.

Zhong works with Assistant Professor Paul Rowley and Professor Doug Cole in the Department of Biological Sciences. Zhong’s undergraduate research focuses on isolating the virus-like element related to pathogens that cause Chagas’ disease and sleeping sickness.

Zhong plans to obtain a doctorate in molecular virology and conduct research aimed at isolating and mapping viruses to create more effective treatments.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 on Nov. 14, 1986, with a scholarship program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater. It is designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
