Computer Science Alumnus David Manz ’05 ’10 Inducted Into SFS Hall of Fame

University of Idaho Department of Computer Science alumnus and CyberCorps (R): Scholarship for Service (SFS) fellowship graduate David Manz ’05 ’10 has been inducted into the SFS Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievement and commitment to excellence in cybersecurity.

The SFS program provides scholarships and tuition stipends to students pursuing cybersecurity training and degree programs. Graduates of the program go on to work in cybersecurity positions at the federal, state, local and tribal levels.

Manz is currently chief cybersecurity scientist in the National Security Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He leads a team of a dozen engineers, scientists and support staff. He holds a Bachelor’s in Computer and Information Science from the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon and a master’s and doctorate in computer science from U of I. Manz’s work at PNNL includes enterprise resilience and cyber security, secure control system communication and critical infrastructure security. Underlying his research is an application of relevant research methods for cyber security.

In 2017 Manz and colleague Thomas Edgar published the book “Research Methods for Cyber Security.” In 2016, Manz received the PNNL Ronald L. Brodzinski Laboratory Director’s Early Career Exceptional Achievement Award. Prior to his work at PNNL, Manz spent five years as a researcher on group key management protocols for U of I’s Center for Secure and Dependable Systems. He also has experience teaching undergraduate and graduate computer science courses at U of I, and as an adjunct faculty at Washington State University.

Manz has co-authored numerous papers and presentations on cybersecurity, control system security, and cryptographic key management.
