Classes and Workshops

Annual Beef Cattle Winter School Series

• A series of educational classes are held each winter for beef cattle producers. Topics are identified by an advisory committee made up of producers from northcentral Idaho.
• Topics address current issues in management, marketing, production, finance and other important topics. Anyone interested in attending these classes can obtain class announcements and flyers by contacting Jim Church.

North Idaho Grazing Conference

• This event is held the first week of January in Lewiston each year. 
• Speakers present educational information on grazing and pasture management. 
• The trade show has cattle and range related information and products and supplies from regional companies that market to cattle producers.

North Idaho beef cattle educational classes

• UI Extension offers classes, workshops and tours on beef cattle management, economics, nutrition, grazing management, forages and marketing at several locations in northern Idaho during the year. Most classes and workshops are held during the winter and early spring with tours and plot work conducted during the summer.

Forest land management classes

• UI Extension educators Randy Brooks, Chris Schnepf and Bill Warren offer Forest Land Management classes and Logger Education classes throughout the year and at various locations in northern Idaho.

Demonstration and Applied Research Trials

Alfalfa variety trials

Thirty-three alfalfa varieties and one sanfoin variety have been planted in two plots, one on a farm owned by the Baerlocher Family near Greencreek and the other on a farm owned by the Thompson Family near Nezperce.

The purpose of the alfalfa trials is to determine which dryland varieties of alfalfa are suited for the climate found in northcentral Idaho. Yield data and protein content will be recorded on each variety.

The sanfoin is being grown to determine if this crop will compete with alfalfa in the region.

Cover crop and grazing trial

Cover crop projects continue to be conducted in northern Idaho. The purpose of this program is to identify forage crops that can be seeded to improve soil health and provide high quality fall forage for grazing cattle.
