Landscape
Within the Landscape division, the daily/seasonal maintenance and care tasks for the green space and walk areas of campus, falls to our area landscape technicians, who skillfully perform their duties so that our campus landscape is safe and enjoyable for everyone to use. These individuals are supported by a group of specialists whose expertise provides for the continued development and maintenance of our campus irrigation systems, grounds equipment, landscape improvement projects, turf and athletic care, flower production and tree and shrub care. A number of the existing programs also work toward sustainability of our campus. For example:
- Since 1990, University of Idaho has planted more than 2,400 trees from 100 different genus and species on campus, some as replacement for removed trees, but most are additions. Trees provide CO2 retention, reducing the volume of greenhouse gases and help cool the environment by capturing solar energy to build complex hydrocarbons. They also provide shelter and food for a wide variety of animal life.
- As part of our flood control program, the university has developed a number of storm water retention ponds and creek diversions, which function as overflow areas for the main stream channel when needed.
- The university's turf management program has instituted sustainable practices that include mulching grass clippings, using automatic watering systems and reducing the use of ornamental turf on slopes.
- For over 30 years, University of Idaho has used reclaimed water to irrigate much of the campus landscape.
The campus landscape is one of the first and last views students, their parents, staff, faculty and visitors encounter on a visit to our university. This inviting green space is the common bond that ties all other university features together. The Landscape division feels it is extremely important to perform their duties well, with the knowledge that everyone who enters the campus will, in large part and for years to come, associate the quality of the university with their perception of the campus landscape.
