Eye Strain

Suffering from tired or dry eyes after spending time on your computer? Follow these tips to reduce pains and strains:

  • Follow the 20/20 rule — Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen and focus on a distant object for 20 seconds.
  • Be sure your computer screen is positioned properly — about an arm's length away with the top of the screen at or just below eye level.
  • Lessen lighting — use well-placed task lighting to illuminate documents and desk work instead of overly bright, overhead lighting.
  • Have your eyes checked regularly — your eye doctor may recommend special glasses, the use of eye drops or other measures that can increase your comfort level.

For additional information on setting up your computer workstation, check out the EHS Computer Ergonomics Pamphlet (PDF).
