Housing Accommodations
For students with specific disabilities, housing accommodations may be necessary in order to provide full and integrated access to on-campus living. Examples of housing accommodations include but are not limited to:
- ADA compliant rooms
- Single occupancy rooms
- Shared/private baths
- Room modifications
Housing accommodations must be reasonable and relate to the students' disability and address their functional limitations. CDAR and Housing and Residence Life work closely together to ensure a positive living environment for students with disabilities who live in the residence halls.
ADA Housing Accommodations:
Please note, if you need ADA accommodations, first you need to complete an application for Housing, next you need complete an application for Center for Disability Access and Resources and make sure to provide all necessary documentation. Failure to do so may result in a significant delay and/or the inability to be able to meet your requested housing accommodation.
Based on review of your request and supporting medical documentation, CDAR may be able to approve your housing accommodations but housing's ability to provide you the qualifying housing accommodation is based on availability of space.
Waitlist
If you are making a request for housing accommodations past May 1, your name will be put on a waitlist which will prioritize your placement if and when a room becomes available. However, there is no guarantee that this will happen prior to the start of the semester.
Requesting Housing Accommodations
Before we can review a request for housing accommodations, you must have applied to live on campus — Apply for Housing. For questions about housing call 208-885-6471 or email housing@uidaho.edu.
Students requesting a Housing Accommodation for the first time should begin by completing CDAR's Online Application.
Documentation can be submitted with CDAR Application, emailed to cdar@uidaho.edu, faxed to 208-885-9404 or brought in person to our office in the Bruce M. Pitman Center, Room 127.
Your documentation must:
- Be on letterhead from a physician or licensed professional
- Be signed by a physician or licensed professional
- List the diagnosis, the date of diagnosis, the duration of the diagnosis and the limitations from the diagnosis
Once you have submitted a CDAR Application and applied to live on campus, the next step is to meet with one of CDAR's access consultants. Contact CDAR at 208-885-6307 to schedule your meeting. For housing accommodations, this meeting can take place via phone.
Once you have met with an Access Consultant, CDAR will inform Housing and Residence Life of your accommodation.
Housing Accommodations must be renewed once per academic year. Returning students should contact CDAR when they apply to live on campus the following semester to renew their housing accommodation.
On Campus Living Requirement
University of Idaho requires all full-time, first-year students under 21 years of age to live in organized living groups officially recognized by the university (residence halls, fraternities and sororities) for one academic year. Students with a documented disability can request an exemption through the Dean of Students Office.
