Stephen Fairbanks joins the Lionel Hampton School of Music as a clinical assistant professor of music education and director of orchestral studies. Previously he was on faculty at the University of Illinois School of Music, where he was an assistant professor of music education and interim eirector of the University of Illinois Philharmonia Orchestra. As a music education researcher, he explores the phenomenon of cultural transmission in education, with particular focus on the ethical dilemmas which can arise when classical music is promoted as a medium for social justice. He aims to assist educators in developing greater awareness of the complex and entangled way their teaching can reinforce perceptions of cultural value. Stephen’s research is deeply informed by his prior career as a public school music teacher. Stephen has taught in elementary, middle, and high school settings. A lifelong string enthusiast, Stephen regularly seeks performance opportunities as an orchestra conductor. His past music directorships include the University of Illinois Philharmonia Orchestra, the University of Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Evanston Civic Orchestra. Stephen holds degrees from Brigham Young University and the University of Cambridge.
