B.F.A. Requirements

The following is a guide to program-specific requirements for current students.

B.F.A. Art and Design

The B.F.A. is a four-year professional degree with focus areas in both art and design that prepares you for a wide variety of creative careers and graduate school. This includes coursework in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Digital Imaging, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Drawing, and Art History and Theory.

The B.F.A. divided into two parts: the pre-professional program (freshman and sophomore years) and the professional program (junior and senior years). Incoming freshmen and transfer students to the University of Idaho do not go through an initial portfolio review.

Second Year Bachelor of Fine Arts Review

During their second year of study in the Art & Design program, students will apply online for acceptance into the Professional B.F.A. Program through the Second Year Bachelor of Fine Arts Review. Portfolio reviews occur mid-semester in the fall and spring. Majors become part of the professional program once they have successfully completed their Second Year review.

Please Note: Students may reapply for entry twice. Student accepted must maintain a minimum Institutional GPA of 2.75 and receive a grade of C or better in all 300-400 level art courses. Students accepted into the professional program must complete 15 credits of 300-level studio courses with at least 6 of the 15 credits in one sequential studio area and 6 credits of art history BEFORE registration in ART 490 and ART 495.

Senior Entry Bachelor of Fine Arts Review

In order to proceed into Senior Experience Course work (Art 490 BFA Art/Design Studio and Art 495 BFA Senior Thesis), those in the professional program must submit their work online for this review. Portfolio reviews occur mid-semester in the fall and spring.
